In a regular game of more than 2 players there is a maximum of three raises allowed. However, when play is one on one (heads-up) the amount of raises is unlimited.
All you germaphobs. Poker is a great game but it is a bit dirty. You have 10 people eating, sneezing yawning and touching the same cards and chips. Wash your hands as often as you can or use some purell but make sure your hands are dry before you touch the chips and cards.
If you are in a hand and you call someones raise, you are in essence paying to see their cards. They must turn over their cards but if you know you are beat you are not required to show your hand. You can muck it. Other players can ask to see your hand but it is considered bad table manners to do so.
You will often experience someone at the table who likes to comment on everyones actions . Often they are trying to intimidate you especially as a beginner and as a women. They critize your actions to make you think you do not know what you are doing. We saw it recently at a charity event where 2 guys tried to intimidate the lone female player at the final table. You must ignore them even if what they say sounds convincing. Play your game.
Do not try to bluff in a low limit game. Unless youy are playing with very cheap people, most people will call you for a few dollars.
You should always keep your cards on the table in site of the dealer. You cannot put your cards on your lap or onto your chair. If you take your cards off the table your hand can be disqialified. You should get in the habit of putting a chip on top of your cards to indicate you want to stay in the hand. This is know as a card protector.
It is important to bulff and switch up your game a little but you have to pick the right time to do it. It’s tough to bluff the chip leader or a person who always calls. Pay attention to the player’s habits. Also if you bluff pre- and post- flop and someone keeps call or raising, cut your loses and get out of the hand on the next bet. Sometime you just can’t get away with it.
If you play your hand before it is your turn to act, you may fold prematurely and you give your opponents information about your hand. Watch the action and wait until it is your turn to play.
The more people in the hand, the more likely someone is going to get lucky. Unless you have the absolute nuts be careful of the slowplay. It is better to win a small pot than lose a big one on the river. Watch the board carefully.
