Being decisive, bold, and committed is critical whether you are at the conference table or the poker table.
In a poker tournament, each player receives the same amount of chips to start. To win, they must acquire every chip in the room. In order to accomplish this, players need to make bold moves. But what we often see, is people betting a little bit here and a little bit there, hoping not to lose too much in one hand. The next thing you know, half the tournament is over and most of their chips are gone. They have made too many small moves which prevent them from losing big but also from winning big. They’ve wasted hours trying to survive rather than win, and they walk away with nothing. It’s called piddling away your chip stack, and it is typically a fear-based behavior.
It is natural for a lot of people to protect what they have and be conservative. But you need to be cognizant of it and consciously start being more assertive and making your “bets” matter. Don’t be afraid to make a bet or decision and take a stand.
Think about when you have the opportunity at work to create a program or make a sale or deal which will showcase your talent to senior management, but instead of making a big move, you spend most of the day crossing minutia off your to-do list, and never get to the meaty stuff that matters and helps you move ahead. Piddling away your time.
Perhaps you are piddling away money on inexpensive but unqualified talent. You might spend a quarter of the going rate and think you are getting a great deal when in fact the project drags on and winds up costing the same or more than it would have if you’d committed the resources upfront to finding the right person.
Focus on the things you want and go after them wholeheartedly. Time, money, energy, and opportunity are your chip stack in life. Don’t be afraid to make bold moves to get them. It can mean the difference between mediocrity versus big success.
If you want to learn to act boldly and stop wasting your time in piddling mode, the PokerDivas program can help. You’ll learn important assertiveness skills to get you in the “play to win” mode while building a network to support your success.
